These magnificent draft horses kicked off the opening of the Rooftop Rodeo in Estes Park, Colorado, on a summer's evening when the light was approaching the golden hour. I was so happy to capture the flowing feathers of their shaggy feet in that golden light. Instead of painting these horses framed by the billboard advertisement in my photo, I substituted a landscape. The title came from my dad, whose stories of his boyhood summers working on his uncle's farm continue to be fresh in my mind - "and on that farm there were two mules": Pearl and Shine - Pearl, the sweetheart, and Shine, the stinker.
"Pearl and Shine" was juried into Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibition at Evergreen Fine Art Gallery in Evergreen, Colorado in 2012.
