Taking the scenic route on my way out of town, on a beautiful fall afternoon in Estes Park, Colorado, I had to stop for a herd of grazing elk, strung out along the road near the entrance to Lake Estes. Out of nowhere, the bull appeared, dashing about, gathering up his harem in a tight bunch, and steering them down into the lake - seemingly, the only place he could relax for a brief moment in that stressful season.
